Understanding Drug Interactions:

  • Drug interactions can alter how your medications work or increase the risk of serious side effects.
  • This document does not cover all potential drug interactions.

Keeping Track of Your Medications:

  • Keep a record of all the products you use, such as medicines with or without a prescription, and herbal items
  • Give your pharmacist and doctor access to this list.

Changing Medications:

  • Do not initiate, discontinue, or modify the dosage of any medicines without consulting your doctor.

Specific Interactions:

  • Drugs that may interact with vardenafil: riociguat, vericiguat.

Nitrates and "Poppers": Vardenafil can cause a severe drop in blood pressure when used with nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide) or recreational drugs like "poppers" containing amyl or butyl nitrite. This can lead to dizziness, fainting, and rarely heart attack or stroke.

Alpha Blockers: If you are taking an alpha blocker (e.g., doxazosin, tamsulosin) for conditions like enlarged prostate or high blood pressure, combining it with Vardenafil may cause excessively low blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting. Your doctor may initiate vardenafil at a lower dose to reduce this risk.

Other Medications: Certain drugs can affect how Vardenafil is metabolized in the body, potentially altering its effectiveness. Examples include azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), and HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., indinavir, ritonavir).

Avoid combination with Similar Medications:

  • Do not take vardenafil with other products containing vardenafil or similar medications used for erectile dysfunction (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), or pulmonary hypertension.
A total of 3,979 patients were enrolled in the study. Of this population, 955 (5.1%) were taking Vardenafil (vardenafil 50mg, 100mg, 150mg, and 200mg). Of the total, 955 (5.1%) were taking > 1,000 mg of Vardenafil. Patients were also asked about their background risk of complications with vardenafil use.

A greater percentage of patients taking vardenafil had history of cardiovascular events (anorgia, chest pain, or stable angina), but only 3.8% of these patients had a history of myocardial infarction (MI), compared to 4.2% of patients taking other medications (p =phabetically different).

Of the total participants, 68.6% were taking at least one medication that may interact with Vardenafil. Vardenafil at these doses has been associated with a lower risk of serious adverse reactions (such as stroke, heart attack, and transient ischemic attack) compared to other medications.
